The art room 5
On the plateau is the devil. Above the devil in the night sky two figures stand out representing actual constellations. The winged bull is acting as a symbol of Saint Luke, who is worshiped as the patron saint of all painters (artists). Next to him is the holy Genesius of Rome, which is regarded as the patron saint of all performing artists, with its typical attributes, the theatre masks and the stringed instrument. They both are the protectors of all representatives of those art forms, which are supported by the Teufelhof with the numerous art and theatre projects.
The artist: Andreas Mattle
After studying art history at the University of Basel and subsequent employment at the Kunstmuseum Basel as assistant to the director, he made the decision to focus on his own artistic work. His artistic work moves between the areas of painting and sculpturing and tries to identify possibilities to combine the two techniques in an interaction. Since 2012 he is studying at the HGK Basel doing his Master of Arts in Fine Arts and is still pursuing his curatorial work in various projects.
Andreas Mattle lives and works in Basel. His two art rooms are unimpressive with daylight but surprising in the dark. His painted figures glow softly when light disappears.
