In the depths of the Teufelhof, along the old Basel city walls from the 11th and 13th centuries, lies the workshop of the Stadtmauer Brauer. In this room, where handcrafted beers are produced, aperitifs, lectures and tastings of all kinds can be held on a smaller scale. And perhaps you would also like to brew your own beer? We also offer brewing workshops.
City wall Brauer
The brewery is situated alongside the old Basel city walls from the 11th and 13th centuries. This is an archaeological highlight, historically significant and the namesake of the brewery. The «Stadtmauer Brauer» brewery is conceived as an inclusive concept, which is also intended to provide a platform for other breweries.
Beers
«Heller Engel»
In reference to the parent house Teufelhof, the name «Heller Engel» was created for our first beer. Dedicated to angels, truly helpers sent by God, this beer is dedicated.
Characteristics of «Heller Engel»
Cloudy and fresh! A light yet aromatic, full-bodied beer.
Brewed from Pilsner malt, lightly caramelised, with hops from Tettnang and Hallertau.
«Dunkler Teufel»
In biblical understanding, Lucifer, the devil, is a fallen angel who no longer wanted to submit to divine rule. This name too was created in reference to the parent house Teufelhof.
Characteristics of «Dunkler Teufel»
A drinkable, not overly bitter, dark beer. It is brewed from Viennese and Munich malt. A small proportion of it is caramelised. Its fine bitter note comes from Magnum hops from Hallertau as well as a second hop, Spalter Select.
«Bengel»
Basel water, Pilsner malt and a little sour malt form the basis for our pilsner-style lager beer. The Magnum hops from Hallertau are responsible for the hoppy, bitter finish; unlike Engel, it is a real Bengel!
Characteristics of «Bengel»
Pilsner malt, Caramalz and sour malt in balanced proportions result in our cloudy, sparkling pilsner-style beer.
«Schlingel»
Double hopped and higher in alcohol content. The strong hop emphasis and top fermentation of the IPA are features of this beer style, but the strong hop bitterness is even more memorable.
