Kunsthotel

In the main building there are 9 very special rooms, artistically designed by renowned Swiss and Italian designers. The individually designed spaces offer a special atmosphere that makes the stay unforgettable. The rooms in the Kunsthotel are accessible via a spiral staircase and, due to listed building regulations, have no air conditioning. Except for the suite, all rooms are furnished with two separate beds. Click in and choose your personal preferred room!

The concept of the art rooms:

The Teufelhof is virtually the inventor of the art rooms; it is the first art hotel of its kind. Essentially, it is about experiencing art in a new context. The idea is that the hotel rooms are realised as works of art and created as «space art». These space-filling, genuine worlds of experience place very specific demands and make it possible to experience art in a new context. In conventional exhibitions, the art audience can only stay for a limited time and is constantly disturbed in their individual engagement by other visitors. So if you want to exclude these aspects, only one thing remains: you have to create «exhibition conditions» that make it possible to make such a work of art habitable and individually experienceable. This is exactly where the Kunsthotel in the Teufelhof Basel comes in: here, art installations are created in the hotel rooms that can be experienced, in the truest sense of the word, by guests, but also by visitors.

The new art rooms

The Kunsthotel has eight rooms and one suite, all furnished as habitable works of art. At irregular intervals, the rooms are redesigned. The idea is that guests effectively live in art and that, as is otherwise usual, art is not only seen on the room walls. An intention that has great significance in its implementation: guests should be able to experience art in a new context.

We are pleased to present the new art rooms to you. The theme of the new staging is „Crossing Definitions“.
At the centre are artistic works from various genres: from
contemporary art and architecture to fashion and design as well as photography. Under «Crossing Definitions», seven internationally renowned artists from different  generations were invited to individually design the art rooms. The artists use different media, materials and room-specific concepts in their works.

The new art rooms were created in collaboration with curator Jean-Claude Freymond-Guth.

And this is how the room allocation looks:

Zimmer 1 Sonnhild Kestler
Zimmer 2 Dieter Meier
Zimmer 3 Mickry 3
Zimmer 4 Polina Moroz

Zimmer 6 Bruno Zhu
Zimmer 7 Gina Folly
