About the room

For his art room at Hotel Teufelhof, Bruno Zhu has created a kind of “spectral” room. All room surfaces such as walls, ceiling, but also doors and door frames were painted according to a specially compiled colour chart – with one colour for each direction. So, for example, everything that is the ceiling is in pink, and everything that faces east is in blue. Even small details such as the inner edges of cupboards and doors were taken into account. This results in entirely new colour combinations depending on the viewpoint, some complementing and some contrasting. It creates a sense of space as though the room were weightless.

The colour combination chosen by Bruno Zhu is inspired by the colours of one of the most famous paintings, which can be seen at Kunstmuseum Basel: Arnold Böcklin's „Life Island“ from 1888. What is striking is how contemporary the tones of the almost 140-year-old painting are. And this stands for a time in which restraint, moderation and humility were preached. Böcklin's painting as well as Bruno's artwork are anything but that: they burst with vitality and joie de vivre, are cheerful and playful.
