About the room
Gina Folly is a conceptual artist and works mainly with photography and sculpture.
Her photographs and objects are quiet observations of everyday life, our habits and the people within it. The themes are intimacy, longing, love, but also our approach to these through places, rituals or materials.
For art room 7, Gina Folly has staged a large-format, hand-enlarged photograph as an elegant lightbox, with the photograph being replaced every year. In Folly's elegant photo essay, the artist has for a few years now documented Basel from an unusual perspective and shows how the city is changing – and what is happening at its edges, alongside the well-known places and viewpoints. Like an additional window in the small attic room, the photograph shows a summer scene by a river. The almost inconspicuous-looking situation invites close observation. Different groups of people, for example; they are talking or having a picnic, cooling off from the summer heat while standing in the water, taking photographs of themselves or having an afternoon nap. The banks of the river are neatly mown and clean, and above them runs a rusting railway bridge covered in graffiti.
The scene radiates calm and harmony; it could be in many places in the world and yet is so typical of Basel. Like the probably disused bridge, the canalised river also bears witness to an industrial past, when this place was probably not yet an urban local recreation area. Anyone who recognises the place will also know that the river – it is called „Wiese“ – also forms the border between Basel and Germany. A border that the people depicted in knee-deep water cross effortlessly. And not least the people themselves: in various groups they are together and yet apparently without any obvious interaction. Nevertheless, they are all part of the same fleeting moment on a summer afternoon, which the artist captures with her camera. How will each individual remember it, one wonders?
