About the room

Renée Levi understands the entire room as a canvas for her art room. For the artist, this includes the existing architectural elements such as the floor, walls, beams or furniture. But it also includes less tangible aspects such as perspectives and lines of shadow from light and movement, as well as the view outside. Levi’s artistic intervention unfolds the effect of the room as a whole and directs the gaze in a wide variety of directions and perceptions. Her work therefore consists of two pictorial elements: firstly, a flat painting that frames everything in the lower part of the room into a kind of “basin”. The line at which the colour changes to the usual white of the walls follows the line of sight when standing in the room and looking from one side to the other – similar to sweeping your gaze along the horizon of a mountain range. The surface takes up the colour of the floor, but is interspersed with many silver pigments, so that the surface shimmers depending on the incidence of light. The second element is a gesturally painted mural which takes up the entire end wall of the room. It is designed for the view you have while lying in bed – perhaps the most common perspective in a hotel room. In Levi-typical style, the painting shows large, enormously dynamic movements, framed by a kind of border. Here, green and blue tones alternate, merge with one another, and meet on doors, cupboards or walls – like branches or water carving their way through the landscape.
