«Since mankind is blessed and cursed to reflect on being, and thus only truly becomes Homo sapiens, unique as a species on earth and in the known universe, it struggles in all it does for meaning. In art too, beneath the surface of the “inutile”, from the cave paintings via the Nude Maya to Duchamp's urinal lurks the curse of meaning and significance. Man is a meaningless accident, circling a sun on earth like a piece of intergalactic driftwood for the fraction of a cosmic second, desperately struggling for meaning in the nonsense between birth and death. The Association des Maîtres de Rien acknowledges that there is no meaning to being, and lives out nonsense and insignificance. The members of the Association des Maîtres de Rien are not committed to depicting nothingness, but to the final beauty of non-being and the self-purpose of days and years in the wonderfully ridiculous shell of Homo sapiens on the planet. The Association des Maîtres de Rien stands outside any kind of creation of meaning that degrades life into a means to an end. It glorifies the idleness of being. What remains is the emptiness of nothingness, which shines in gold in objects of radical meaninglessness, or perhaps not.»
